Nhằm nâng cao hơn nữa về giám sát chất lượng nước trước khi phân phối và truyền tải tới người dân (nơi tiêu thụ), cũng như kiểm soát tối ưu hóa quá trình xử lý, nhiều đơn vị đã và đang ứng dụng khoa học công nghệ trong việc giám sát các chỉ tiêu chất lượng nước online. Trong đó, có ba chỉ tiêu phổ biến và quan trọng thường được giám sát online là độ đục, pH, clo dư.
