Measuring water flow at high temperature and high pressure in a thermal power plant.

In the Czech Republic, the Opatovice Power Plant (EOP) is a coal-fired power plant with a generating capacity of 363 MWe and a total thermal capacity of 698 MWt, making it one of the leading energy suppliers.

Here, the power plant produces electricity and recovers thermal energy in the form of hot water. This hot water is transported to regional heating networks through approximately 290 km of high-pressure pipelines.

Through these pipelines, EOP supplies hot water to approximately 60,000 households and hundreds of commercial, medical, and cultural facilities. The transportation of this hot water requires continuous operation and maintenance to provide essential services to the entire region.

Challenges and solutions

Due to the aging of the old pump system and the existing differential pressure flow meters being outdated and lacking diagnostic functions to monitor pump conditions, it has become difficult to control failures. Moreover, the pressure drop in the pipeline has affected the efficiency of the entire distribution system and caused significant losses in the plant's operations and production.


Therefore, EOP decided to replace the old pump system and upgrade the existing flow meters to ensure a stable and continuous hot water supply system.

To monitor the amount of hot water transported and the pump's performance, EOP selected and replaced it by installing two Rosemount electromagnetic flow meters with a pipe diameter of DN300/12 inches.

Reasons for choosing Rosemount flow meters

  • Meets the demanding performance requirements of the new pump system.
  • Easy installation: The compact size of the meter makes it easier to install into existing pipelines.
  • Rosemount flow meters are designed with optional liners and electrodes, ensuring accurate flow measurement under water temperatures up to 170°C and pressures of 25 bar, while virtually eliminating factors affecting measurement results such as humidity and contamination.

  • Rosemount flow meters have operated stably under harsh operating conditions without any incidents for the past 2 years. Significantly reduced repair and maintenance costs.
  • Rosemount meters cause virtually no pressure drop in the system, reducing the need to increase pump capacity and saving costs.
